Luke 21:29-31

He told them this parable: "Look at the fig-tree, or any other tree. As soon as it buds, you can see for yourselves that summer is near. In the same way when you see all this happening, you may be sure that the kingdom of God is near."

Meditation: We don't need to look at trees to know that summer is not near. We can look at our thermometers! But Jesus isn't really talking about trees or seasons. His point is that we need to be always listening for what God is eager for us to know. He was specifically speaking of the end of time, the epoch in which God wraps up the universe and imparts the promised justice. In the preceding verses, he had pointed out some of the features which will announce the approaching world's end. But we need to be listening for even more than those particular kinds of signs. God does give each of us insights through the intercession of his Holy Spirit. Are we tuned in?
